PEER REVIEW RESOURCES

Information for Reviewers

The Institute of Academic Research and Publication (IARP) is committed to advancing open-access scholarship through rigorous, fair, transparent, and ethical peer review. As an independent academic publisher, IARP recognizes reviewers as essential contributors to scholarly communication. Their expertise, time, and professional judgment help ensure that published research meets appropriate standards of academic quality, integrity, and relevance.

This document outlines the principles, responsibilities, procedures, and ethical standards governing peer review across IARP journals.

1. Importance of Peer Review

Peer review is a fundamental component of scholarly publishing and an important safeguard for research integrity. It enables manuscripts to be evaluated by qualified experts who can assess their originality, methodological rigor, scholarly significance, and relevance.

At IARP, peer review serves three principal purposes:

  • Quality Assurance: To assess the accuracy, clarity, reliability, and scholarly rigor of submitted research.
  • Scholarly Development: To provide constructive recommendations that help authors strengthen their arguments, methodology, analysis, and presentation.
  • Editorial Decision-Making: To assist editors in determining whether a manuscript satisfies the journal’s academic standards and scope.

IARP regards reviewers as valued partners in maintaining the credibility, integrity, and quality of open-access scholarly publishing.

2. Peer Review Model at IARP

IARP journals generally employ a double-blind peer review process, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are concealed from one another during the review process. This approach is intended to promote impartial evaluation and reduce potential sources of bias.

In most cases, each manuscript is assessed by two independent reviewers selected according to their subject expertise, academic qualifications, research experience, and suitability for the manuscript. Where appropriate, particularly in highly specialized fields where suitable expertise is limited, a manuscript may be evaluated by a single qualified reviewer.

Regardless of the number of reviewers involved, IARP maintains appropriate confidentiality throughout the review process.

The final editorial decision is made by the Editor or Editorial Board after careful consideration of the reviewer reports, manuscript quality, journal scope, and applicable editorial policies.

3. Peer Review Process

The peer review process generally follows these stages:

  • Step 1 — Initial Editorial Screening: The manuscript is assessed for suitability, relevance to the journal’s scope, completeness, and compliance with submission requirements.
  • Step 2 — Reviewer Selection: Manuscripts considered suitable for external review are assigned to qualified reviewers with appropriate subject expertise.
  • Step 3 — Reviewer Evaluation: Reviewers critically assess the manuscript and provide constructive comments and a recommendation to the editor.
  • Step 4 — Revision: Where revisions are required, authors are invited to respond to reviewer comments and submit a revised manuscript. Where appropriate, the revised manuscript may be returned to the original reviewers for further assessment.
  • Step 5 — Editorial Decision: The editor or Editorial Board considers the reviewer recommendations and the overall quality and suitability of the manuscript before reaching a final decision.

Possible editorial decisions include:

✔
Accept Manuscript meets all standards without substantial modifications
✎
Minor Revisions Manuscript requires minor conceptual, textual or formatting refinements
↻
Major Revisions Manuscript requires significant analytical, empirical or methodological rework
✖
Reject Manuscript does not satisfy the journal's rigor or foundational scope

4. Reviewer Responsibilities

Reviewers are expected to perform their duties objectively, professionally, and ethically. They should:

  • Provide Objective and Constructive Feedback: Evaluate manuscripts fairly and provide clear, evidence-based comments concerning originality, methodology, clarity, significance, and scholarly contribution.
  • Maintain Timeliness: Complete reviews within the agreed timeframe or promptly notify the editorial office if an extension is required.
  • Maintain Confidentiality: Keep all manuscript materials, reviewer reports, and information obtained during the review process strictly confidential.
  • Declare Conflicts of Interest: Immediately disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest that could affect impartiality.
  • Identify Ethical Concerns: Alert the editor to suspected plagiarism, duplicate publication, research misconduct, inappropriate citation practices, or other ethical concerns.
  • Support Scholarly Development: Provide respectful and constructive recommendations that may help authors improve the quality and presentation of their work.

Reviewers should evaluate manuscripts solely on scholarly and academic grounds and should not be influenced by an author’s personal characteristics, institutional affiliation, nationality, gender, religion, political views, or other irrelevant considerations.

5. Evaluation Criteria

Reviewers should consider the following areas when evaluating a manuscript:

  • Originality and Novelty: Does the manuscript offer original findings, interpretations, perspectives, or contributions?
  • Scholarly and Methodological Rigor: Are the research methods appropriate, clearly explained, and sufficiently rigorous? Are the reasoning and analysis logically supported?
  • Clarity and Organization: Is the manuscript clearly written, coherent, and logically structured?
  • Relevance and Significance: Does the manuscript align with the journal’s aims and scope and make a meaningful contribution to the field?
  • Ethical Compliance: Does the research comply with applicable ethical standards, including appropriate citations, permissions, participant consent, and responsible data practices where applicable?
  • References and Scholarship: Are the references relevant, sufficiently comprehensive, appropriately cited, and reasonably current?

Every recommendation should be supported by clear and well-reasoned comments that assist the editor in reaching an informed decision.

6. Review Report Submission

Review reports should be submitted through the designated Review Report Submission Portal to facilitate efficient processing, secure recordkeeping, and appropriate tracking.

If technical difficulties prevent submission through the online system, completed review reports may be sent directly to the Executive Editor at
editor@iarpnet.org.

IARP greatly appreciates the time, expertise, and professional judgment contributed by its reviewers. Their service is fundamental to maintaining the quality and integrity of scholarly publications.

7. Reviewer Recognition and Acknowledgement

IARP recognizes the valuable contribution of reviewers to scholarly communication and seeks to provide appropriate professional acknowledgment while respecting reviewer confidentiality and consent.

Depending on the applicable journal policy and the reviewer’s explicit consent, recognition may include:

  • Official Reviewer Certificates: Electronic certificates may be issued upon completion of assigned reviews.
  • Acknowledgement in Published Articles: Reviewers who consent to recognition may have their name, institutional affiliation, and country acknowledged in the relevant published article.
  • Article Webpage Recognition: With appropriate consent, reviewer acknowledgment may also appear on the article’s online webpage.
  • Annual Reviewer Recognition: With consent, reviewers may be included in an annual reviewer acknowledgment or reviewer panel.
  • Professional Opportunities: Reviewers who demonstrate sustained and high-quality service may be considered for appropriate editorial or scholarly opportunities.
  • Letters of Service: Formal letters confirming reviewer service may be provided upon request.

Reviewers may request that their identities remain undisclosed. No personally identifiable reviewer information should be publicly displayed without the reviewer’s consent.

Serving as a reviewer can also provide valuable academic benefits, including exposure to emerging research, development of critical evaluation skills, and opportunities to contribute to the advancement of scholarly communication.

8. Confidentiality and Data Protection

All materials associated with peer review must be treated as confidential. Reviewers must not copy, distribute, disclose, or otherwise use unpublished manuscript content or reviewer materials without appropriate authorization.

Reviewers must not use information obtained through the peer review process for personal, professional, or competitive advantage, or in any manner that could disadvantage the authors.

IARP is committed to protecting personal information associated with the editorial and peer review process and follows applicable data protection principles and requirements.
